About Department of Physics

University Grants Commission sanctioned the establishment of "Vikram Space Physics Centre"during the first phase of IV Five year plant (in the year 1975), to launch research activities in the area of "Astrophysics/space Physics.

The set-up soon became one of the leading centres in India and abroad for research studies in the field of Cosmic Rays and Interplanetary Physics. Later on, this nucleus got transformed into a full-fledged Physics Department in the year 1982-83, to prepare the students for higher studies. The research centre was established in 1975 with the primary aim of conducting research in the area of Space Physics as well as to generate manpower in this area, for which a special paper on "Cosmic Rays" and "Space Physics" was introduced at M.Sc. level. The regular M.Sc. Physics teaching started in 1982-83 after due concurrence of the State Govt., which provided a broad-base for regular teaching and research in Physics with particular emphasis on Space Physics & Electronics". In due course, these two specialisations got established with firm footings.
